  • Black Bear Diner, St. George, Utah

Black Bear Diner, St. George, Utah

Black Bear Diner is a restaurant chain in the western United States which serves homestyle and "old-fashioned" comfort foods. The first restaurant was opened in Mount Shasta, California[1] in 1995, founded by Bob and Laurie Manley with help from Bruce Dean.[2][3] The company is based in Redding, California. It now claims 82 locations in eight states, 48 of which are in California,[4] with 16 more under construction.[4]

Black Bear decor has a rustic motif with "over-the-top bear paraphernalia".[5] Every restaurant is decorated with a 12-foot-tall (3.7 m) black bear carving by artist Ray Schulz. Additional murals and artwork are created for each restaurant by Steve and Gary Fitzgerald and Colleen Mitchell-Veyna.[3] The menu format mimics an old newspaper titled: The Black Bear Gazette with articles on the front page.[1] It offers family meals such as breakfast, burgers, salads, and shakes.[6] Baked goods prepared on site are offered, and some locations offer alcohol sales.

St. George is a city in and the county seat of Washington County, Utah, United States. Located in the southwestern part of the state on the Arizona border, near the tri-state junction of Utah with Nevada, it is the principal city of the St. George Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies in the northeastern-most part of the Mojave Desert adjacent to the Pine Valley Mountains near the convergence of three distinct geological areas: the Mojave Desert, Colorado Plateau, and Great Basin. The city is 118 miles northeast of Las Vegas and 300 miles south-southwest of Salt Lake City on Interstate 15. The city is named after George A. Smith, a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Apostle.

As of the 2015 U.S Census estimates, St. George had a population of 80,202, and the metropolitan area, defined as Washington County, had an estimated population of 155,600.[1] St. George is the seventh-largest city in Utah and the most populous city in the state outside of the Wasatch Front.

In 2005, St. George was ranked the second fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States, beat only by Greeley, Colorado, this trend continued through 2010, when growth slowed substantially due to the economic recession. Today however, growth trends have once again increased at a steady pace, ranking St. George as the fifth fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States.

Just two miles east of the Capitol Reef visitor center, the trailhead to Hickman Bridge offers hikers an easy, spectacularly scenic trek up to a large natural arch. The trail is not particularly long or steep, but it provides access to some amazing sites, including the large arch itself, as well as a smaller arch, and a Fremont pit house ruin and nearby granary.
